These just cane in the mail and they are so cool. They are coasters, and yes, I am aware that I am, in fact, a nerd.

ClamCase™ The all-in-one Keyboard Case & Stand for iPad®

This may very well be the coolest case for the iPad I have seen yet.  I want one!

iPad Apps? Where are the good ones?

Is it just me or is the quality of iPad apps leaving something to be desired.  There are a couple good apps but overall I feel like I keep waiting for the really killer apps and never seeing them.  I’m going to hope that they are still in development and that we will see them in the next few months, but there just seems to be a lot of crap in the app store for iPad, redundant crap at that.

"IT guy on phone: Yeah, we had to let Sam* go this weekend. (pause) Yeah, the server’s fixed. (pause) Uh, it’s sort of weird. (pause) Yeah, well… He was on call rotation and got called in. He was high. (pause) He brought ten packs of pasta noodles with him, and jammed each noodle into the mail server intake fan. (pause) Something like that. He said the sound the noodles made against the Delta fans was the sound of the Microsoft demons being cast from the server. (pause) He managed to fill the server case with noodle shrapnel, which made the system overheat. (pause) How would I know if he successfully cast the demons from the server? (pause) No, it’s still booting server 2008, if that’s what you mean."

This Apple really is for the teacher (and students)

iPad on the road

As I write this, I am sitting in a hotel room in Orlando. The reason this is important is because of what I am writing this on…my iPad. Normally, when taking a trip, I would bring my laptop.  For this trip, however, i just brought the iPad and i am happy to report that it is filling the role of my mobile computer device rather well.  This is my first real test of the usability of this amazing device as my mobile computer. I’ve taken notes with it, surfed the web, prepared a short presentation, played some games, read a book, and now I am typing a blog post.  I will admit that I am writing the draft in evernote and will copy this into the tumblr website.  The only reason I am not typing this straight into tumblr is due to the absolutely abhorred intent connecting in my room, therefor this may not actually be posted until tomorrow when I go to the lobby where there is better wifi.  Some things that have been rather nice.  I have not charged this since leaving my home in Land O Lakes and I currently have 18% battery remaining. I’ve been using it rather extensively and with that kind of use on my laptop it would have had to be plugged in quite a bit.  I will tell you that i am using the soft keyboard and where I would want to use it for typing all day, it has been fine for what I have been doing.  When the camera connection kit comes out I will have no need to take my laptop on trips, in face I will probably get a desktop for my next computer and let the iPad fulfill my mobile computing needs.  I am very happy with my iPad am I look forward to bringing it with me on future trips.

The Thrill of Flying the SR-71 Blackbird - Blackbird - Gizmodo

When I was younger, I was really into military jets.  My all time favorite was the SR-71 Blackbird.  It is still a marval of flight and human engineering, and it just looks beautiful.  I know that it was designed for speed but there is an element of utter bad ass to the design that says “don’t fuck with me.”  This article does a good job of capturing just how great this jet was and still is.

Microshoft needs a new marketing department

I HATE the windows 7 was my idea comercials. Really? Bull shit windows 7 was your idea, though I would believe you came up with this marketing plan. And who wants to read subtitles on a commercial? It’s a damn commercial, not a foreign film.

"I don’t think I’m being an elitist techie when I say that some people are just idiots. Try as you might to make your product idiot-proof, there’s always a better idiot just around the corner. Designing your site for the stupidest, laziest members of your audience is not just a waste of time, it’s insulting to the rest of your users."

Facebook users try to log into Read Write Web article thinking it's facebook

(Note: Click the above link and scroll to the comments area at the bottom)

I have a great concern for a society where so many people can’t tell the difference between Facebook (a blue themed site) and Read Write Web (a red themed site).  The people that logged in to this site thinking it was Facebook had to do all of the following:

1) search for “facebook login” instead of using a bookmark or just typing in the address.

2) Completely miss the fact that the title clearly reads in Big effing letters “Read Write Web” not Facebook

3) Miss the fact the site looks nothing like Facebook

4) Scroll all the way down a page that looks nothing like facebook, searching for the facebook login that is usually at the top of the page.

5) Once at the bottom of the page, past all of the other people leaving comments who have done the exact same thing, and log in to leave a comment under the clearly marked and bold “leave a comment” banner.

I would understand and sympathize with someone who did any one of the above things, maybe two, But to do all 5…Open your god damn eyes, try reading!  This is how people get their identity’s stolen. People can figure out how to navigate the Facebook website well enough to play farmville but they can’t tell the difference between these two sites.  WTF!

Seriously, I can’t feel sorry for them.  Facebook isn’t exactly a shinning example of user friendly design.  It’s not terrible (see MySpace) but someone who can figure out the basics there should as least be able to tell what webpage they are on. Can we please try to raise the level of awareness in this country, at least to the point that we don’t just give away our log in information to anyone who asks.  If not, please send a blank check made out to Match Bradford.

"Iran’s telecommunications agency announced what it described as a permanent suspension of Google Inc.’s email services, saying instead that a national email service for Iranian citizens would soon be rolled out. It wasn’t clear late Wednesday what effect the order had on Google’s email services in Iran. Google didn’t have an immediate comment about the announcement."
