I love listening to a recording of an orchestral work and hearing the sounds that make it so real. The creak of the stage, the sound of fingers sliding up and down the strings, the breathing of the brass players as if they were sucking all the air out of the auditorium. There is no compressor on this recording, I know this because I can hear dynamics, the vast differences between pianissimo and fortissimo, soft and loud, as wide as a canyon. I can hear the slight imperfections in vibration, a small stutter of the bow on a string, that let me know it’s a real string instrument and not a synth in it’s perfect warble of artificial vibrato. If I close my eyes, I feel like I’m sitting in the ensemble. Yes, there is still a place for acoustic instruments… also a good set of headphones.
Sometimes I like to just put my headphones on and isolate myself from the rest of the world… just me and some tunes. Bliss
This makes me happy.
I love the song Anna Begins by Counting Crows. I think it’s the way it starts, the simple drum intro. Sets a great mood. I love a song that is minimal in construction, that has a simplicity and carries a clear emotional thought. It’s a good late night chilling song.
My friend assures me, “it’s all or nothing”… What a great opening line. If that was all you heard, where would you take the story? There is an evolution in the song, an evolving story that is mirrored by the music. Subtle changes in the texture of the drum parts signaling mood changes, a soft hammond organ resolving into the chorus.
You try to tell yourself the things you try to tell yourself to make yourself forget… There is a certain rhythm to that line that I honestly look forward to. When you first hear it you don’t really get it and you have to think about it for a second.
And every word is nonsense but I understand
